We had a patient on 8 South ortho/neuro who was in a work accident. This patient only speaks Lithuanian. As you can imagine this created a struggle in caring for the patient and understanding his needs. Paige Wightman is a nurse who has cared for this patient often and has done a lot to ease his situation.
Paige not only went and bought the patient clothing after realizing he did not have anything here, but she also translated his goals/discharge plans into Lithuanian on his whiteboard. She created a template for common needs such as an ice pack, pain mediation, bathroom needs, etc. that are listed in Lithuanian with the English translation next to it. She noticed the patient was getting specific meals from the dietician who was doing the best she could, but Paige realized he was not eating much and did not seem happy with selections. She then translated the entire menu from Lithuanian to English so he was able to select what he would like to eat.
I have now taken care of this patient on five different shifts and I cannot tell you how much these things have helped with his care. It is so comforting for the patient and staff knowing we have some means of communicating. Due to most of the interpreters being located in Europe, they are not always regularly available. The patient also saved a card in his wallet that was written by Paige all in Lithuanian. These things have meant so much to him in this vulnerable time and we are lucky to have such a dedicated nurse on our unit who will go above and beyond for patients. Throughout the shifts that I have taken care of him, the patient has mentioned Paige several times. I cannot stress enough how valuable the resources have been to this patient and staff to improve the care we provide.
