On Friday, June 5, the OR staff performed actions well above and beyond their normal responsibilities. It was a team effort that was genuine and came from the hearts of each staff member involved.

Our patient that day had severe developmental disabilities. He self-mutilates by biting and scratching himself. He is non-verbal, uncooperative and combative. He cannot communicate in any form. There were obvious gross deficits in his personal hygiene, open wounds and scabs throughout his body. When the Orthopedic surgeon completed the scheduled surgery, the OR team asked if they could provide personal care and tend to the wounds on his body while under the effects of anesthesia. Otherwise, it would be impossible to perform these tasks. The Surgeon agreed and the team went to work!

The patient's protective headgear was removed, and it was deemed unsalvageable. Morgan Biggs, RN, went to a local sporting goods shop and bought him new headgear to wear. She paid for this out of her own personal funds. Surgical Tech Margaret Morrison went to the gift shop and purchased a new blanket for our patient. His blanket that he carried everywhere with him was too soiled to use.

Dave Conley, RN obtained soap, shampoo, oral care products, and linens and gave the patient a head-to-toe bath. Orderly Taylor Page assisted David with the bathing process. Surgical Tech, Janet Perry, and visiting Surgical Tech, Susie Miller, worked on cleaning and caring for his fingernails. They also provided care to the multiple flesh wounds on his upper extremities and wrists. Morgan Biggs, worked on his face, ears, and scalp wounds by cleaning and dressing appropriately. Craig Wooten, CRNA, thoroughly cleaned the patient's teeth and mouth.

Our team was truly burdened by the condition of this patient, and wanted to reach out in a meaningful way to make a difference. With other OR cases to start, the team said "let's stop and do what we can to make things better for our patient". This is a true example of the compassion and caring nature of our staff at Baptist Health Paducah, and a nomination for a DAISY Team Award.
