Every day that Olivia O'Brien comes to work, she gives her very best to not only her patients but also families, co-workers, new nurses, and students. She has a passion for teaching the new generation of nurses and willingly seeks out the opportunity to teach, knowing that such an action is the best way to have a direct opportunity to mold the future generations of nurses. Even on the busiest of days, Olivia never lets the care of her patients or her professionalism wane. She truly understands that at the end of the day we are all here for the patients and she ensures that patients and their families are central to all facets of the job at hand. She is kind and respectful to even our most difficult patients and families.
Olivia makes a point of letting the patient feel they are being heard and respected no matter the situation or her opinion of the situation. There have been many times that Olivia is the only staff member that can form a relationship with a difficult patient. I believe that it is because they get the feeling that she is safe and has a moral compass with which she provides no judgment.
Olivia's clinical skills are phenomenal, and she accomplishes the most difficult tasks with a smile and a joke to lighten the atmosphere. Not long ago, I ran into Olivia in the lobby on her day off with her two children in tow. When I questioned why she was here on her day off, Olivia explained her elderly neighbor was in the hospital. With the patient's consent, Olivia followed his care, provided assistance, and an ear when needed. Unfortunately, the patient expired and when Olivia came to tell me of his passing, she was visibly upset. This is the kind of care, compassion, and advocacy that Olivia provides to her patients and each and every person that she cares about.

Olivia was truly an amazing nurse. She surrounded us with timely help and compassion. Her communication skills were impeccable. She understands the needs not simply as a patient in pain, but from an emotional need perspective. She was a genuine, quality caregiver, timely, always smiling, thorough, clear and did the impossible to make me most comfortable. We saw her in action mentoring the staff and training students. She listened to our needs and implemented to a level beyond our expectation. Just truly an amazing nurse.
