TRICIA MEARS was called the Child Birth Unit to start a second IV line on a patient who was in the process of delivering quadruplets; too early to survive. Patient needed blood and Pitocin and had lost her second IV line and OB staff after several attempts needed help. After a successful restart, Tricia offered to go get the blood from the blood bank.
Upon return to the Child Birth Unit, the nurses caring for the patient; EMILEE FOSTER, MEGAN SELLERS, DIONE GANSER, JEN DELIO, DEVIN DEVEREAUX and charge nurse, REBECCA MACDONALD had taken the patient to the OR for and emergency D and C. Tricia went to the OR to help infuse the blood and help restart yet another IV. JESSICA DAVIS from Main OR came up to help as well and together with Tricia, they helped infuse blood products while the OB staff tended to the surgical part of the D and C.
DIONE stayed with the Dad in the Birthing Suite caring for him and the babies born too early to survive. Anesthesia put together a list of things needed from major OR and Jessica D. went to go get them. KRISTA NOBLE, house supervisor that night, who coordinated the care transition from OB to ICU, was a member of the team caring for this patient. NICKY WALLS, charge nurse from Mother Baby Unit, came to help as well, acting as a runner back and forth from lab and blood bank.
This patient was sent to ICU where she spent a few days, returning to Child Birth Unit where her grieving continued, holding her babies.
Due to the coordination, collaboration and team work of this team (5 departments), the patient survived.
