Noreen went far beyond expectations in her care for her patient in a very special situation.

Noreen and I were talking about a patient she was taking care of and I told her I had this same patient the Friday before as a triage patient. This patient was very anxious to go home before 5:30 (if she was able to be discharged) because that evening she had to meet with her Reverend and the baker for her wedding cake. She was planning a wedding for that Sunday, just two days away. As luck would have it, she was discharged! Only to come back in that Sunday, on her wedding day, with PPROM and preterm labor BEFORE the ceremony took place. Labor progressed and she delivered a premature baby and missed her wedding.

Because Noreen's patient had given birth and missed her wedding, the couple decided to get married in our chapel the next day, Monday, Memorial Day. When I told Noreen about the experience I had with the patient the Friday before, she realized the patient may not have her wedding cake. Noreen checked with the groom (who was just bubbling over with excitement because he was getting married) and he told her they were never able to get their cake. That's when Noreen realized she just might be able to get them a surprise wedding cake.

Well, being a holiday (Memorial day), with holiday staffing, it made it a little more difficult to obtain a cake. Noreen started with dietary. She was told about what type of cakes they had (it sounded like they had a very nice one available). So call after call and she found a cake BUT authorization was needed to get the cake for the patient. Noreen continued to work on this wonderful project. She then called the nursing supervisor who was able to get the much needed authorization for the wedding cake.

Noreen was persistent and it paid off for this soon to be married couple and got them something they were not able to have for their very special day - a surprise wedding cake!
