In the recent turn of events at Adult Cardiology Department, like the increasing of bed capacity and the very high patient turn over brought about by the 24/7 services rendered by our KSMC's Cardiac Cath Lab and KSMC being the leader of CLUSTER I hospitals, I can say that we really have come a long way. The setback for this great improvement is staff that is overworked and burnout. In the past months more staff is rendering their resignation, they may not write the truth about the reason for their resignation, but I know that they cannot tolerate the long hours of work and very busy CCU with no salary increase. The burden of work and shortage of staff have contributed to that feeling of "I do not want to work anymore" feeling. Through all this, there is one staff whom I admire most, she keeps her composure, stands her ground during tense situations and you can always count on her in emergency situations. I consider emergency situations in CCU/CICU when one of the staff nurses cannot come for duty because she is sick or one of the Charge Nurses has to go for emergency vacation because of family issues. Without complaint, this staff always takes the responsibility tasked to her. Give her three high acuity patients and you will not worry that something will go wrong, she always makes sure that her patients are well taken care of. Her name is Niya Raju, CCU staff and preceptor.
One night shift, the second charge nurse assigned at CCU/CICU was not able to attend her duty on that day because she was sick. Niya was on duty and was chosen to cover the absent CN. Considering the fact that she has no prior experience, she could have refused but she took the challenge and has done a great job. It was a very busy night with eight admissions; she needs to run from fourth floor CICU to Second Floor CCU down to the ground floor Pharmacy for medicines. It was the first time ever that she was chosen to cover the CN duty but she did a great job without any complaints. The only thing she said was it was hard and tiring but that she has learned something.
Niya is a nurse whom you can rely on always, ready to lend a helping hand to everyone, to her patients and her colleagues.
