Nicolette was taking care of my sister-in-law. As a nurse myself, it spoke volumes on what a compassionate and skilled nurse she was. My sister-in-law had a stroke in central Iowa and was transferred down to Iowa City the same day. My brother had been with my sister-in-law every day except one night. She was his life and his only love. She had been diagnosed with MS shortly after the birth of their second son. 34 years later, the stroke was the obstacle that she could not overcome.
During an overnight, her status changed, and my brother told me how Nicolette watched her, called doctors, kept him informed of what was going on and then, during the code, was very calm, professional, and supportive to him. He told me several times if it had not been for Nicolette, my sister-in-law would not have made it through the night. She gave him support and comfort as his family was three hours away. This was the first time he could see that he was going to lose her. When loved ones are that far away, it is nice to know that there are nurses that take care of our loved ones when we can't be there. This was the first nurse he acknowledged in all the years with my sister-in-law's many trips to the hospital as being a Great Nurse.
