Our mission statement here at Donor Network of Arizona is: "We make the most of life through the gifts of organ and tissue donation." However, we often shorten this to read: "We make the most of..." This shortened version reminds us of the need to bring our best to each and every moment, no matter how big or small.
Our site coordinator passed on to me how your presence and leadership made a huge impact on a recent case. She shared with me that you, as well as other members of the nursing staff, were exceedingly generous with your time and expertise; mentioning that the physicians and nursing staff were very cooperative in assisting with explaining brain death to a Spanish speaking family from Mexico. She stated that the staff had gone over brain death testing at least three times in conjunction with the doctor's additional explanations. She also said that this was fundamental for the family to move forward, allowing them to make the lifesaving decision to save lives through organ donation. In addition, you collaborated wonderfully with Donor Network staff to keep the option for organ donation possible. Without your patience and expertise, this would not have been a possibility. When we meet as partners in sharing and saving lives we at Donor Network of Arizona are filled with gratitude and humility in such a demonstration of humanity and compassion. Ultimately, this donor offered a second chance at life to four other patients, including a lung transplant recipient, two kidney transplant recipients, and a liver transplant recipient. Skin tissue, which helps many more people, was also accepted for transplantation.
It is always so important for us to stop and express gratitude when we are greatly assisted in this mission of organ donation. Your staff's professionalism and time allowed this family healing from this tragedy and gave meaning to their loved one's life in a new way. Thank you again for your essential part in showing such patience and compassion.
