Prior to Nicole Mauceri becoming a nurse she was a Paramedic for 10 years. During any emergent situations, she is calm, cool, and maintains the patient's respect during the most chaotic and traumatic time. She has raised the level of respect in Interventional Radiology.
A few years ago, we had a sentinel event in the department. Nicole was instrumental in providing her expertise to nurses who are baby boomers and who may have been threatened or placed their guards up when receiving education from someone much younger than them. She broke down the barriers and mentored the staff through rigorous mock codes and has earned the respect from nurses who have worked in the department for 40 years. She treated them with honor and provided leadership to a team whose spirit was fractured. Nicole repaired the reputation of the department by instilling hard work and dedication to her team when it was much needed.
Dignity in nursing is multifaceted and includes respect, autonomy, empowerment, and communication which Nicole emulates daily. Nicole respects everyone she encounters, and her own self-belief and self-respect are contagious. When she enters the department, the mood visibly brightens because she creates a positive environment which starts with mutual respect. Her vast knowledge, experience, and competence translate to a confident staff that works autonomously. She embraces her lead nursing role which empowers her and her staff.
Communication is amongst Nicole's greatest strengths. She speaks directly and clearly so that nothing is lost in translation. All these attributes allow her and her staff to deliver high-quality care to patients in Radiology as well as throughout the hospital by way of the Vascular Access Team every day. She has a keen ability to sense a patient's needs and she will always start an encounter with a disarming smile or look of empathy and concern. She builds immediate trust with patients who quickly believe that she will provide exceptional care while respecting them, their privacy and their individuality.
Nicole has been and continues to be an incredible and highly regarded leader in the Department of Radiology. Nicole has the respect from the radiology leadership. I am honored to work with her every day and respect her continued contribution to the Department of Radiology.
