Nicole is our "resident traveler". She has been extending travel contracts with our department since roughly 2014 and she has been an asset the entire time. Nicole has served as an informal leader at times as a shift team leader. She's also volunteered to float to our Emergency Department to help. She is extremely flexible and considers every patient her own to care for. The team always appreciates her helpful and team-centered attitude!
She recently had a patient experience a syncopal episode in the department. Nicole quickly called for help and was about to start CPR when the patient awoke. Nicole not only responded and intervened quickly for her patient, but she communicated with the patient's son (who witnessed the event) beautifully. She speaks so clearly to patients and their family members and in a way that they can understand what is going on and what the plan is. I know the patient and family member felt at ease under her care.
Nicole was caring for a patient that had discharge orders. From a medical standpoint, he was cleared to go back home. Nicole took the time to really talk to her patient about what his needs were at home and then decided to advocate for him to have more resources made available to him. She assessed that it would not be safe for him to go home and collaborated with both the provider and the social worker. They ended up filing an APS report and made special arrangements for the patient so that he could safely go back home.
Nicole has been a major advocate for her patients at Goldfield when it comes to their dietary options. Recognizing that nutrition is a huge contributing factor to healing, she has courageously spoken up about common dissatisfiers and offered to help partner on improvements. Nicole brought numerous suggestions forward including additional floor stock and hot meal options and her leaders could take her ideas and research and transform them into positive actions. We now stock several more food items on the floor for our patients and we have hot meals that can be prepared at night. This change didn't simply impact one Goldfield patient, but in fact, impacted all our inpatients.
