The subject title of "compliment" in this email does not begin to describe the appreciation and respect that my family felt for Natalie Crowe today as she cared for my father-in-law who was admitted for complications related to terminal stomach cancer. This has been a very difficult time for all of us, especially for him when it was suggested by his doctor that he be admitted. He insisted on walking up to the oncology unit because he didn't know if he would be walking out. My husband and I walked beside him with a wheelchair in case he became too weak. Upon arriving to the unit we happened to see Natalie first and she greeted us with a big smile and immediately made my father-in-law feel comfortable with her demeanor of compassion, professionalism, and humor. It was the perfect combination of what he needed. I could see the anxiety he felt be lifted away knowing that he would be in good hands.

As an RN myself, I could see how busy the unit was with so many patients needing excellent nursing care. It was all I could do to not roll up my sleeves and go out and help those nurses on the unit. Natalie gave my father-in-law her undivided attention when she was in the room with us and made him feel as if he was her only patient. She made me miss being a bedside nurse and having the opportunity to make connections with patients and their families. Helping them through difficult periods and bringing a smile out despite the pain and fear they felt inside. The genuine dedication and teamwork that she and others demonstrated today warmed our hearts. To witness bedside report from the patient and family's perspective was very much appreciated and allowed the patient to be involved, maintaining his dignity and sense of control. I could see that it also increased his comfort level when the time came to reassign nurses during shift change. I want to share my heartfelt appreciation tonight as I reflect on the day we had. Natalie is beyond deserving of the DAISY Award.
