It gives me comfort and pride to know there are nurses like Natalie caring for our loved ones when we are not able to be physically present with them through illnesses, being their voice and advocate.
Natalie was a shining star who quickly realized my brother-in-law's potential for decline and served as his voice and advocate during his ER visit.
He was a return patient, having been seen discharged from the ED 2 days prior with a diagnosis of COVID pneumonia. His condition was worsening, but he was still "borderline" for admission due to his young age, lack of chronic health conditions, and the capacity of the hospital at that time. Natalie recognized he had the very real potential for a decline in condition and his dependence on oxygen at the time was urgent. She was his advocate with the provider who was "on the fence about admitting" and served as my brother-in-law's support person and patient advocate during his ED stay.
I know patient advocacy is 'part of what nurses do'; but sometimes it is overlooked as one of the most important aspects of caring for others. My family and I are incredibly grateful for the continued excellence of Maury Regional through this trying time; and it gives me comfort and pride to know there are nurses like Natalie caring for our loved ones when we are not able to be physically present with them through illnesses, being their voice and advocate. Navigating healthcare is difficult but made more tolerable when you trust those who are charged with the care of the people you love.
