Nara Murphy is an exceptional team member and integral part of the ongoing happiness of 12B staff and patients. Nara is a living embodiment of the Parkland CIRCLES values. Nara started receiving comment cards literally immediately upon working here; she was still in her precepting weeks and was getting compliments written down by patients about how wonderful and caring she is. She has a magical way of connecting with our patients from all cultures, ages, and walks of life. Nara is compassionate to her patients; she goes above and beyond in her care by bringing patients gifts and tokens of appreciation on holidays purchased on her own time with her own money. She bought socks on Christmas and got teddy bears all ready for Valentine's Day.
Nara shows integrity with the way she is extremely honest with her own story and how she has overcome obstacles in her personal life to become the successful woman she is today, as well as in having an energetic work ethic that ensures both Parkland and her patients get their money's worth every time she works! She earns her check, is not here to just collect a check.
Nara demonstrates respect to our patients in a way that is inspiring; she speaks to her patients in a respectful manner that they can understand by keeping it real with them and letting them know she is their advocate and taking care of them. She treats our homeless or drug-addicted patients with the same kindness and enthusiasm she treats the little old man that lovingly reminds her of her "Paw-Paw." We have a very difficult patient on the floor who can become belligerent on a whim, and even on days he isn't her patient, she is quick to go into the room and speak to him in a way that calms him down and restores peace and order to his room so everyone, the patient and staff alike, all feel safe again. She also treats her co-workers with respect. The PCAs on our floor love her because she is not above any task; you would never hear her say "that's a tech job." She is right there, side by side, answering call lights, assisting with ADLs, turning and cleaning the patients. She is also quick to jump up when a fellow nurse needs help with a narcotic waste, a 4-eye skin assessment, a complicated dressing change, or to pull a larger patient up in bed.
Nara collaborates with her team as well. She serves on the 12B Rewards, Recognition, and Retention committee and just recently joined PUPS as a skin champion. She has an eagerness to learn more, teach others, and to celebrate successes along the way.
Nara demonstrates leadership in how she carries herself on the floor. She doesn't let a difficult patient assignment, or an extremely demanding situation let her lose her cool. Even when she is physically tired, and it's more obvious because she picked up over time or stayed late the previous shift to help, she stays positive saying things like "I can do this a few more hours. Let me get some Dr. Pepper and recharge!" She stays focused on taking care of the patients, prioritizes her duties, and keeps a smile on her face with her co-workers. She advocates tirelessly for her patients and their needs. She communicates their plan of care and keeps them informed of their progress and does so in a confident yet nurturing manner that makes them feel they are cared for by competent people.
Nara demonstrates the Parkland value of Stewardship by doing literally everything on the Parkland Circles poster. She takes good care of our physical resources; she tidies up as she goes to our workstation, break room, the bathrooms, and her patient rooms. She stops and picks up stuff and cleans up and provides order to what otherwise looks messy. She is on the 12B Rewards, Recognition, and Retention committee and actively takes on responsibilities for the committee like shopping for and price comparing supplies for staff parties and the awards for our employee of the quarter from our Sunshine Fund. She shares ideas to improve our system and ultimately improve patient care and doesn't look to get recognition for her ideas. Recently she knew I could attend a roundtable with the CNO and she couldn't, and she asked me to bring up a concern. She just wants to help, she doesn't want to be labeled a helper.

She deserves to be recognized for her dedication to her patients.

Nara was very courteous, patient, and professional with me. When I needed something, she was prompt to take care of my needs. She also has a great personality.

I greatly appreciate the compassionate care Nara has provided my fiancé today. Nurses like her are few and far between.
