Five years ago, Monica was studying to become a teacher at Miami Dade College when she went into labor and delivered her son, who was born nearly four months pre-mature.Monica and her husband visited their son every day in Bethesda Hospital's Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. During that time, Monica was so inspired by the wonderful nursing care that the nurses gave to her son, that she switched from wanting to become a teacher to pursue a nursing degree instead.
The grateful patient who nominated her for the DAISY Award wrote about Monica's caring, compassionate clinical skills that made a difference during his care not once but twice, when he was admitted as a patient to the 3rd floor at Bethesda Hospital East. The patient commented:"Monica was unbelievable. She is the most caring person and is on top of patient needs. She always knew when I needed my medicine; I never had to call. She knew my condition and was so professional and caring. When I left, I wrote a comment card. I was admitted again and she saw that I was there and came in and gave me a hug, thanking me for noticing her incredible nursing skills. She is so caring that she even teared up reading my comments. I know Monica cares about every patient and gives above and beyond care all the time."
