Misty is an Extraordinary Nurse. We received a patient who desperately needed surgery. The patient faced a long journey as he dealt with altered mental status over several days and a new trach. While providing care his first evening on the floor, Misty fell victim to workplace violence. Despite being punched, Misty ensured the patient received the love and care that every patient deserves. Over the next several weeks, Misty would volunteer to be assigned to him, and even on days that she wasn't, she made it a point to stop by his room and share words of encouragement. It was one such evening while providing his care, the patient took Misty's hand and placed it on his chest. He looked into Misty's eyes and mouthed "I hurt you." In a calming voice Misty replied, "Yes you did, however, I know you didn't mean it at the time and I am here to care for you." As tears filled his eyes, he responded "I don't deserve you as my nurse." They held each other's hands and shared a deep bond that was sealed with tears of forgiveness and love. Over the next few weeks, Misty worked with him to establish self-care of his trach so that he could one day make it back home to his family. During his final week on 5South, Misty collected notes with words of encouragement from her peers and placed them into a jar to give to the patient and help him on his next journey of healing.
As nurses, we often face moments that challenge us. It is these challenges that define us and remind us of why we are in healthcare. Misty's kindness helped a patient through a difficult time and got him on his road to recovery. We are truly honored to have Misty caring for our patients on 5South.
