Nursing is a very unpredictable and demanding job, some days even more unpredictable and demanding than others. Michelle Bella is a gritty nurse who exemplifies determination and compassion. Day in and day out Michelle's perseverance and stamina are evident through her patient care provided.
One day, the top of Michelle's morning shift started with a bariatric patient in her 20's in full arrest trapped in a car in the Emergency Room lobby entrance. In cohesion, the ED staff including quickly started working together to pull the patient safely out of the car. After initiating ACLS, the ED physician attempted to intubate this young lady by passing a tube through her vocal cords, the intubation was unsuccessful due to severe obstruction of the airway as a result of the neck. The physician proceeded with an emergency tracheostomy to take over her respiratory drive. Michelle and her team of nurses, techs and ED physician worked tirelessly and silently in an attempt to restart this young lady's heart with immediate family at bedside, coming to terms that after trying everything they could the patient could not be saved. This was an emotionally charged and heavily stressed situation for everyone involved.
Fast forward a couple of hours into the shift. The Mobile Intensive Care Nurse in the ED receives a call, a severely burned dementia patient in her 80's on her way to SARH in need of stabilization prior to transporting to the nearest trauma hospital for higher level of care.
Michelle, being the resilient and determined nurse she is, dove into the situation. Working closely alongside the ED team and the Emergency physician coordinating care with each other, ensuring that the health care delivery would have an immediate and positive impact on the patient to get her on her way to a higher level of care for treatment of what was diagnosed to be 3rd degree full-thickness burns over 80% of the body. Upon arrival, the team was ready to efficiently provide complex care. Ultimately, stabilizing the patient's airway with intubation and arranging transport via air for continuation of trauma.
Michelle Bella is truly a stellar nurse, a great team player and consistently treating colleagues, patients and family members with dignity, kindness, respect, and compassion.
