My father was brought to the emergency room and eventually made his way up to the floor. Michaelangelo took over for the overnight shift that night and was there every night of our stay. He was always there, making sure our father was comfortable and all of his needs and our family's needs were met. He was amiable, gentle, compassionate, confident, and professional. Our father took to him quickly and trusted him with his care. His character was evident in and through his every word and action.
Our father was going to move to another floor for hospice care. Michaelangelo was focused on the care of our father and attentive to his and our every need. When transport was taking too long, he came in and said: we aren't waiting any longer. He got the PCT and said that we will take him down. In the process, transport did show up and take over wheeling the bed, but Michaelangelo stayed with us all the way down, making sure my dad was comfortable in his room. When he was ready to leave and go back to his unit, he said goodbye to my dad, but promised him that he would come down through the night to check on him.
When he shook my dad's hand, my dad said, "It was an honor to know you". The word honor is not used lightly by a WWII veteran. He would only use it if he meant it. As his daughter and son-in-law, we wholeheartedly agree that this nurse deserves every bit of the word, honor, for the way he treated and respected our father during the last days of his life. Michaelangelo has reverence for the dignity of human life. He is a fantastic nurse. It was an honor for our family to entrust our father's care to this nurse.
By the way, as an honorable man, Michaelangelo kept his word. He did come back down to see our dad and left him (and our family) a note on the whiteboard.
Thank you for EVERYTHING!
