I have worked with Mike for over 10 years. During this time, I have admired him and his many attributes that make him so deserving of this recognition. He has demonstrated his professional skills and knowledge in many, many ways, not only as the RN he is today but as an MT (Milieu Therapist) in the past on the Dual Diagnosis Unit. I would like to speak more of his personality, demeanor, and exceptional way he is able to interact and engage with our patients and colleagues. As a leader, he sets the stage for a day that is most likely going to benefit from his calm and caring attitude and approach with staff and patients alike. he offers an insight that role models a positive and respectful approach that can influence even the most challenging patients or staff. He offers his perspective on difficult situations and patient behaviors that reflect his commitment to dignity, respect and compassion.

An example of the most recent highlight was during our morning report. Mike was discussing one of our patients who frequents the inpatient unit and is well-known for his confrontational and volatile behaviors. Mike simply stated that he was dealing with this patient with a "whole clean slate", giving him the benefit of the doubt, advocating for other staff to do the same, and setting an example of the importance of providing a safe, therapeutic environment for each person who seeks treatment from us.

Mike's wit and humor are an added bonus! More importantly, Mike represents the kind of professional we all strive to be and challenges those of us who become discouraged and negative to take a good, hard look at ourselves and decide if we are giving our best to not only our patients but to each other.
