Nurses’ passion, dedication, and skills are vital to the patients and families that spend any length of time at St. Mary’s and we are committed to recognizing those who inspire this commitment. The Recruitment, Retention, and Recognition Council is continuously searching for additional ways to recognize exceptional St. Mary’s nurses. In this search, the council discovered the DAISY Award.

St. Mary’s is proud to recognize our first DAISY Award recipient, Michael Hawa RN, BSN. Michael is a nurse in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit. The family member who nominated Michael truly felt his care and compassion throughout their time at St. Mary’s and stated,
“My father was admitted to CVICU early Saturday morning with a massive MI. My family and I believe Michael's care of my father on Saturday and Sunday night enabled him to pull through for the implantation of the ICD [implantable cardioverter-defibrillator] on Tuesday and his subsequent care post-implantation allowed him to be transferred to the 5000. Michael's skills and compassion as well as understanding of the individualality of my father was crucial and essential for his survival. He cared for the entirety of my father, not just his heart, and that is why St Mary's should be proud that a nurse of Michael's caliber chooses to work here.”

Congratulations Michael!
