As an emergency room nurse myself, I will admit I can be critical of care provided to my family in the ER setting. In this particular situation, my husband had warmed up a full can of spray paint on a wood stove in the hopes of getting it to spray out the clogged nozzle. You guessed it. When he took it off the stove and shook it, explosion injury involving the head. Picture black glossy spray paint all over your face, in your eye, and left side of the head, covering and inside the ear, and someone now with a bigger hearing loss than just selective. When I received the call I was at work and I notified the ER of the potential situation. Mike was the RN who was assigned the case. He went out of his way to help set my mind at ease by making sure he told my husband, with me listening to every word, who he was, what he was going to do, and what he could expect as next steps. I immediately knew we were in good hands. Mike was able to work through order and Pyxis issues (as the hospital had just rolled out a new Pyxis system) to get the needed medications in a timely manner without my husband even knowing there was an issue. He then discussed what the doctor's plan was and did all in his power to keep this anxious wife calm and cool. I have had the opportunity to see Mike in action in other situations as well, working to help keep all patients safe by being the voice for better workflows for many processes in the ER. I know first hand that he is an excellent nurse, takes his role seriously, and is a nurse who I wouldn't mind having take care of me or my family in an emergency. Thanks, Mike, for taking care of my husband and me as well.
