I followed Mendy after she took care of a patient for the weekend. This particular patient had several issues over the weekend including low blood pressures, blood loss, and fatigue following the anemia. After receiving report from Mendy, I went to introduce myself to the patient and realized just how hard Mendy worked all weekend to ensure the best care was provided for her. The patient told me the story of how Mendy made multiple phone calls in order to get a blood transfusion ordered for the patient. She was able to tell that she needed a transfusion because she had looked at her records for the entire year and a half. The patient has had surgeries and knew her hemoglobin was not normal for her. The patient then told me that she had some shivering during the blood transfusion, so Mendy stayed with her during the entire transfusion, holding her hand. She remained observant for signs of a transfusion reaction through the entire unit of blood. The patient voiced to me that she made her feel "like her only patient". Mendy took care of the patient again on Sunday so she could tell that the patient was still not feeling well, had low blood pressures and some dizziness. She again advocated strongly on her patient's behalf to receive another transfusion. I was able to assume care the following morning and heard just how incredibly appreciative the patient was of Mendy going above and beyond the call of duty. The patient's blood counts responded well to the 2nd unit of blood and she felt so much better, she owed it all to Mendy's extraordinary nursing care and willingness to advocate for her patient. I want Mendy to be my nurse. I was so very impressed with everything she did for this patient, as was the patient. Mendy deserves recognition for this incredible demonstration of compassion and being an amazing nurse.
