I brought my son into the Emergency department due to a serve panic attack. The nurse that cared for him was so patient and kind to him. She validated his fears and concerns and assured him they would take good care of him and help him stabilize. One of the most impressive things was that she listened to him intently and helped him understand what was happening to his body. The nurse was not judgmental at all, in fact, she was very supportive. She taught him some self-help techniques that he could use to avoid future episodes. She taught him breathing exercises, relaxation techniques, a way to distract his mind when he is obsessing over a worry or a fear and lastly taught him ways to incorporate some of these techniques into his daily life. My son is young and is not overly impressed by Western Medicine so when the nurse taught him a few things that did not involve pharmaceuticals or other more conventional solutions, he was so appreciative. When we left, he was so impressed that he immediately went out and purchased some of the teas that the nurse recommended. He is eager to take control of his anxiety and now has some tools to use on his own. He has also done some research on things that she was teaching and is trying to learn as much as he can. What started out as a really bad day turned into a blessing.
