My husband was a patient in the Neuro ICU for many weeks after experiencing a fall at home. He suffered from head trauma and lung issues. Melissa not only tended to my husband's every need, but she also kept me calm through a very difficult time. She continuously monitored him during a specific time when he was struggling to breath with the vent, she called the RT staff. As Melissa adjusted the meds, she stroked his head and talking to him slowly and calmly, yes, the meds were helping, but I believe that he responded to her taking the extra time to talk to him with her calming nature, stroking his face, as I sat weeping and frightened. Then she spoke with me; turning her calming nature to me. I believe that the simple act of human compassion that Melissa displayed is above and beyond the clinical teachings. She will never be forgotten by me and I know my husband heard her that day, because he began to calm his breathing as she spoke. UW Hospital can be very proud to have her on their team... I know I was.
