It was early January. It was cold out, there was snow and ice on the ground in Philadelphia, and a new storm was predicted for the coming days.

A homeless patient admitted to Jefferson through the emergency room was ready to go. But the 21-year-old man's shoes were missing. Despite a search the shoes were "nowhere to be found" and efforts to obtain a pair of size 13 shoes to provide the young man were unsuccessful.

"There he stood in the hallway ready to go in his stocking feet," a nurse recalls.

That's when staff nurse Melissa Glazier, RN, intervened to ensure her patient didn't return to the wintery streets of Philadelphia without shoes. Without hesitation, Melissa walked to the Gallery during her lunch break and bought the patient a pair of shoes and warm socks.

"Melissa not only met all of the patient's immediate needs, but she treated him with the utmost dignity and respect," one of the nurse's colleagues says.
