Melissa was working as the stroke nurse on Friday when an elderly gentleman came in as a stroke alert. All the patient was able to say was Bam-Bam which was the name of his dog. He couldn't remember the password to his phone, he had no family or friends near by to contact. Melissa was passionate about finding someone to help take care of Bam-Bam. After numerous phone calls to the VA, banks, and library she was able to get in touch with his landlord. The landlord offered to care for his dog Friday night but said he couldn't help anymore. Unfortunately, the CT scan showed that this gentleman was outside the window for TPA and was being admitted. Melissa didn't stop her care there. She went to the hospital on Saturday, her day off, to visit with the patient and make sure he had care worked out for Bam-Bam. The plan is for the patient to be discharged tomorrow. Again, Melissa is using her own time on Sunday to pick this patient up and make sure he has the follow-up care that he needs.
Melissa is a wonderful nurse who goes above and beyond in caring for her patients and their extended family. This is an example of compassion in caring for the patient and his dog by working diligently to find help for both the patient and his dog. Innovative by placing numerous phone calls trying to get in touch with family, friends, and then luckily being able to get in touch with his landlord. Respectful by advocating for this patient when he was unable to do so himself.
