Missi impresses me with the care she gives to her assigned patients as well as helping with other patients not assigned to her. She is organized, has a can-do attitude, is very helpful, knowledgeable, and she asks questions when she needs clarity.
Recently, we had a patient dying and on Hospice care. The situation was unusual because the patient had extensive bowel surgery. Soon after surgery, it was discovered the bowels were leaking and the patient and her family decided not to try any more surgery and moved to comfort care.
I don't know if the family understood at the time that her fecal matter would be leaking out of the large abdominal incision. The family went through a lot during the death of their mother. They were very unhappy with her care initially. Maybe because it was so overwhelming. Missi came in the next day with a new perspective and genuine understanding that the family needed much reassurance and the patient needed frequent bedside attention for the management of the odor and keeping the patient clean, dry, and turned for comfort. It is difficult to maintain a wound management system on the belly. Missi did her best to keep it working and to share with other staff members the importance of the care we were all trying to give.
I feel Missi meets all of the descriptions of a DAISY Nurse, including professionalism, quality, respects, service, and teamwork.
