Melissa was taking care of a patient on a Friday who was hoping to be discharged that day so he would not have to spend his birthday in the hospital. Unfortunately the plan of care involved the patient staying through the weekend for IV antibiotic therapy. This patient had expressive aphasia from a previous stroke and had a difficult time getting his words out.
Melissa spent the time talking with the patient and learned that he was afraid that his birthday would be forgotten if he was in the hospital. The following day, Melissa again was taking care of this patient. She made the patient a card and printed happy birthday signs and put them up all over the patient’s room. Melissa also asked dietary to send the patient a special birthday treat. When the small birthday cake came up with lunch, Melissa sang the patient happy birthday, which brought him to tears.
This is a perfect example of patient centered care and demonstrates the compassion and wonderful care Melissa gives to her patients. I am proud to work with such amazing nurses and wanted to recognize Melissa, as she greatly deserves it!
