A patient admitted to the hospital on Unit 2 at Northpark for over a week; he was stressed and unhappy as he faced many life altering healthcare decisions. This was difficult for the staff. I was following up with him because he stated he was having communication issues with some of the staff and with his physician. As I followed him through the week, I witnessed the most outstanding compassionate nursing care from a new grad named Megan Sutherland. Megan calmly took over the care of this patient, provided him with constant information/feedback and was truly his advocate. He told me how attentive Megan was to his needs and how much he appreciated her wonderful care. Megan helped him as he and his wife worked through the decisions he needed to be make and provided him with all of the possible alternate choices so that he could make an informed decision. She always responded quickly and accompanied the physician so that she could answer any questions that might come up later. This is the kind of daily excellent nursing care that represents what we strive for. Megan always had a smile on her face and assured this patient that there was nothing more important than his care and the needs of his family. I would like to thank Megan for working with me – she is awesome.
