During my stay both in August and November, I had the opportunity to see many different nurses in action. Most were very accommodating and concerned with my well-being. There was one nurse, in particular, that was exceptional. Megan was extremely knowledgeable. Not just about basic health care, but she was aware of many current research studies that impacted my healthcare.
In addition, I witnessed Megan conversing with Dr. L for about ten minutes. The conversation between them was very thorough and it was clear that Dr. L both listened and respected her thoughts. For my care, Megan was also knowledgeable about how Dr. D does things, particularly around my wound care. In addition to her knowledge, Megan demonstrated superb training skills.
On the morning of Sunday, I witnessed her training E, a student from Newman, on both me and my roommate. Megan took the time to explain procedures and for some, she demonstrated where E didn't feel comfortable, and then informed E she could do it the next time.
Through all of my interactions and observations, I have always seen Megan as encouraging and compassionate. She did this in her discussions with doctors, nurses, techs, and students in training. However, it was most obvious with patients. She was supportive and encouraged me to walk. I made many loops between 4D and 4E. With some of my trips to the bathroom, I left blood drops on the floor, but she made me feel normal and said I should not bend over to clean it up. I also heard her encourage a patient to blow into an AirLife. They first got 400, but through some good encouragement, they doubled it.
I recognized the need for pain medication, but Megan was helpful in characterizing what each pill/shot did. When my pain was tolerable, I was able to opt of out pain medication knowing exactly what I was doing. She was helpful and caring and supportive of my feelings.
Lastly, I would like to close saying Megan was extremely friendly. During my stay at the hospital with long hours and sometimes unruly patients, being a nurse with a friendly disposition can be a challenge. Megan excelled at being friendly.
You are doing the right thing by pairing her up with students. She is an excellent role model.
