Megan Byrne was having such a difficult day in the PICU because her five-year-old patient had a concussion. The patient would not stop screaming and everyone in the hallway will attest that these were very loud screams! She knew this patient was screaming because of his concussion and she still continued to give him great care. One task that we needed to complete was eye drops which challenged us as nurses because he would not stop screaming and hitting. However, after our last set of eye drops, suddenly there were no more screams from the patient's room. I wondered how this could be and as I looked in the patient's room there was this nurse working her PICU magic. As I peeked in, I saw her holding her patient's hand and counting 24, 25, 26... I listened until they reached 100! Then they started on the ABC's and her patient even impressed her by saying his ABC's backward at age 5! These small exercises helped the patient calm down and gavehim reassurance that everything was going to be okay.
