As a friend, classmate, and observer of the care given to J, I wish to share my experience. On Friday, being informed that J was hospitalized, I immediately went to be with her all afternoon until her death. J was restless; I do believe for a time that she did recognize me, as I held her hand, spoke and prayed. Her respirations were loud, with constant 'rattles', along with frequent deep-down coughing.
Her assigned nurses attended hourly to her care. An NP from Palliative Care explained J's plan of treatment. Before going off duty the Chaplain came, realizing J's condition from his morning visit.I was impressed that he would take time to do this, again praying with and blessing J.
J was transferred with all of her 'stuff' to the 9th floor, where she was met by Matthew Snitker, RN, and a thoughtful CNA. From the moment that Matt touched J, I had the feeling that 'this is a special compassionate nurse." And so, it was. With each gentle movement as when removing the previous bed linens to her present bed, Matt explained to J, what was being done in an informative caring tone of voice. He offered and did bring in a 'lazy boy chair' for me, saying that the one in the room is not comfortable for many.
All that Matt did was done as I can imagine Florence Nightingale did for the wounded soldiers. The CNA brought in a comb, which J didn't seem to have, to comb her disheveled hair. J's respirations became quiet, gentle as there was a definite ethereal tranquility presence in her space. I continued holding her hand as I prayed aloud the Divine Mercy Chaplet.A minute later she was pronounced dead.
Thank you, Mayo/Franciscan Nursing staff, for having Nurses, such as the outstanding Matt, providing patient care. I must say that every person that I mentioned were persons whom you too can be proud. For Matt, I truly hope that he is given some award as I truly believe, that he provides this level of care to all patients with whom he comes in contact.
Gratefully with Love and Prayers.
