I was in the ICU battling COVID-19 and intubated for twelve days. My family and I are forever grateful to all who cared for me during my stay. But we especially want to shine a spotlight on Nurse Matt in ICU.
Matt and the other nurses and doctors gave me excellent care and communicated with my family, but Matt showed such compassion and went well beyond his normal duties during this pandemic. My daughter and my husband called several times a day since they could not see or visit me. Matt and my daughter would talk regularly but after sharing my status, Matt would listen to her when she shared information about me that she felt might help him know me better. Matt saw me as a person and truly wanted to learn about my life prior to COVID.
As he got to know my family better, Matt would set his watch alarm to remind himself to call my husband of 52 years when he was dressed to enter my ICU room and would hold the phone to my unconscious ear so we could talk three times a day.
Matt was by my side when I woke up, held my hand as I came off the ventilator and he celebrated as my family would have if they could have been there. Matt volunteered to work even on his days off and my family was truly blessed to know he was there. He joined me during my first FaceTime call with my husband and daughter to ensure they could hear me, and I could hear them. In a time of such uncertainty and mounting loss, Matt was real with my family yet showed care, compassion, and empathy.
Prior to my being released from the hospital, my daughter called back to the ICU to see if I could visit with Matt before I left but he was not working. My discharge nurse knew Matt and notified him that I was leaving. Matt took time out of his day to call me and celebrate my release with me.
When I asked how I could best recognize Matt for his care, I was told about the DAISY Award. We feel Matt is a true DAISY Nurse. All the nurses at Meridian Park were wonderful but Matt's heart is so big, and he is so giving that our family will forever be grateful to him. Please share our love and gratitude with him.
