Mary goes above and beyond daily in her charge nurse role in PCU. In one particular situation, a dementia patient came and was aggressive, agitated, screaming, spitting, and trying to get out of bed. Many interventions were attempted but nothing worked to calm her down. Mary went in to sit with the patient who kept asking, "Where is my baby? Where is my baby?" Mary was confused at this statement and decided to call the nursing home she lived at to ask them if they knew about the patient's "baby."
They said, "Yes, the patient has a baby doll that she carries around and it's the only thing that calms her down." It had been left at the nursing home when the patient was rushed to the ER. Knowing this, Mary went to the gift shop and looked for a baby doll; the closest thing they had to a baby doll was a mermaid, so Mary bought it and brought it to the patient.
The patient immediately calmed down and said, "My baby, you found my baby!" From then on, the patient was pleasant and calm with her new baby by her side. She did tell the nurse that the baby doll wore red lipstick and she did not, but she loved the baby doll just the same. When difficult situations arise, Mary does great with figuring out solutions. Not only is she extremely caring, but she is a genius! If I could clone a million Mary's I would, but Mary is one in a million; an excellent nurse and leader.
