I was feeling awful after having to be re-admitted less than 24 hours from being released from SICU. A rare blood-clotting disorder that has plagued me for years and has already cost me my right leg had once again landed me into the hospital for the third time in under two months…this time threatening my left leg and the doctors were already discussing amputation.
By the time I made it to my room on the 4th floor, I was a total wreck. I have severe PTSD and anxiety. Hospitalizations make it worse. Then I met my nurse, Mary. She immediately helped me - not only by making sure I had my medications properly straightened out (they can be complicated!) but by simply taking the time to TALK to me and LISTEN. Then giving me other, non-medication ideas that I can do to keep calm even in the hospital, like keeping my door closed and meditating, coloring, deep breathing, showers, and walks off the floor as soon as they were allowed.
I would not have gotten through this stay without her kindness and skill that first day. She is an excellent nurse. Keep her! Your patients need her. I am better now and able to go home with my whole left leg intact! Thank you Mary Johnson, Oncology, Interventional Radiology, and SICU for all of your excellent care!
