My sister-in-law, J, is currently a patient on the oncology floor. She has a complicated medical history beginning with a 8 cm lung mass that was removed in December. On July 8th she had a brain metastasis removed by Dr. E. We came to Shadyside's ER by ambulance this past Sunday with a rectal temperature of 105.2, a white count of 35,000 and a blood pressure at one point of 44/19. Needless to say, this alone was traumatic. We learned on Tuesday that J's lung cancer has recurred; she has a new met in her liver and on her adrenal gland. Last May, she had a CT scan of her abdomen, chest and pelvis and was free of disease. Obviously, the tumor is very aggressive and as Dr. F in his kindest, most gentle way said, her cancer "is on the warpath."
I want to let you know of an absolutely extraordinary nurse who helped us through an incredibly traumatic day. Her name is Mary Ludwikowski. She made us feel as though she was our own private duty nurse for the day. Our family would like you to know what is PERFECT about Mary. You cannot teach Caring and Compassion.
I wish to express my thanks for having nurses like Mary here to take care of my loved one. She is bright, smart, and most importantly has grace and dignity in all she does. Mary understands what we and the patient want and she is an advocate for these needs. Fortunately, she is scheduled to be on for four straight days and we are so pleased.
