Mary Hathaway is the evening supervisor at Detention Health Care- Juvenile. Going above and beyond is something Mary does every day; examples include working the 7:00 pm-7:00 am shift for her team members instead of asking another team member to switch their days, coming in early as needed, and ensuring that our department does well with the TJJD audits.
Recently, Mary did something that impacted our patients' lives tremendously. Our department was notified that TIPP would no longer be able to fund our patients' routine gonorrhea and chlamydia testing. Our unit does STI testing on all of our patients because they have a high rate of GC/CT and our patients engage in high-risk behaviors. On her own, Mary came up with a plan to ensure further funding for the testing of our patients at both juvenile facilities. This saved UHS a large amount of money, as otherwise, UHS would have absorbed the cost of the Aptima testing, supplies, and treatment. Mary did all of the work on her own and came up with a plan that will work for our units.
Mary's patient care is extraordinary. Recently, we had a twelve-year-old patient who is pregnant; the girl was very angry and resistant to any kind of patient teaching. Mary sat with the youth, allowed her to voice her feelings, and then did excellent prenatal teaching and successfully engaged the youth in her prenatal planning. This is just one example of Mary's excellent patient care.
As a supervisor, Mary chooses to be very active in direct patient care and this her team truly respects and admires of her. She genuinely cares about the 10-16-year-old juveniles who are incarcerated in our facility and are in our care. Our population is underserved and many of our youths have many strikes against them, to include lack of basic medical care. Mary ensures that every youth she encounters feels very special and receives outstanding patient care. Mary truly exemplifies the UHS Commitment to Service Excellence standard in her care of our patients.
Thank you, Mary, for all you do for our patients, our department, and our team members. You are an excellent nurse and a great supervisor. We appreciate all of your hard work.
