In addition to performing her job at an exemplary level, Mary demonstrates an extraordinary commitment to patient and family centered care.
Mary provides exceptional partnership and support to both patients and staff in her unit. She takes it upon herself to complete her daily rounding for all patients every day in her unit. She discerns quickly the individual needs of the patients and their families and moves efficiently to provide the resources needed. She is quite visible in the unit and is readily approachable when assistance is needed by patients and staff alike.
During the difficult transition of leadership in her unit last year, Mary modeled resiliency and provided steadfast support to all staff in her unit. She eventually took the Administrative Nurse Manager position and quickly made positive changes that promoted a caring and trusting environment. The positive change was evident in the significant improvement in the culture of safety score of the unit which improved from "below threshold" to achieving the "stretch goal". Mary is also focused on providing quality and safe practices in her unit. She is quick to resolve safety and quality issues and provides a process-oriented approach to resolve problems. This approach had also improved many quality benchmark scores of the unit. One good example is the improvement of the unit's FIM (functional improvement measure) score. She led the unit in a Kaizen to overcome barriers and make improvements in the scoring of this important functional outcome measure test. The FIM benchmark score of the unit significantly improved by the end of 2018.
Fondly known as the "go-to" for most things in the unit, staff from the different departments of the unit call upon her for her service. She is helpful, caring, resourceful, and happy to help no matter the task. She often performs above and beyond and readily provides her service so willingly and cheerfully.
Her leadership has significantly improved the staff moral and has positively changed the environment of 7W such that staff are able to easily connect with patients and their family members. This caring connection is evident in the consistent high patient experience score of the unit which earned them the "Guardian of Excellence" award from Press Ganey in 2018.
Mary's leadership has proven to enhance the image of the Nursing profession and influenced the creation of a caring environment that motivates staff to achieve better outcomes for themselves and for their patients.
Note: This is Mary's 2nd DAISY Award!
