Mary Crabtree, RN

4B Cardiac Unit
Mercy Hospital Springfield (MO)

When I arrived in my room, Mary was waiting for me; she introduced herself and the student nurse that was with her. She explained every detail about the workings of the call button, and what I could expect during my treatment. She also provided little things that were just intended to make my stay more pleasant. Somehow she knew I am a Master Gardner and run a community garden. This led to me telling her about my garden and the story of "old timers". Upon leaving, Mary said I would be her role model for aging - at 81 years old that made me feel good about myself. Emotionally she definitely helped to give me a lift.

Mary just provides the best care ever!

You can just tell that Mary is genuinely concerned for her patients. She has an ability to connect with each individual to put their fears to rest. She keeps the environment cheerful but very professional. When Mary tells you what she will do to take care of you, you just know that she will do it! And she did.

Mary put me and our entire family at ease by taking time to explain what we could expect on the day of my wife's procedure. Thank You.

I want to recognize Mary Crabtree for what she did for a young boy. We had a patient scheduled for a stress test, he had his 8 year old son with him. There was no one to watch the boy while the patient was off the floor. Mary said that we would all just watch him together! She went to the cafeteria to get the boy breakfast, and also picked up crayons for him to color. She blew up gloves and made silly faces on them. After a while, the boy's grandmother arrived but said she didn't want anything to do with the boy. She also said several unkind things to the boy. Mary pulled the boy to the side and told him he was special, and that no one could compare to his sweetness. She also brought out all the pictures he drew and showed them to all of us. When the grandmother heard this, she said the only thing that boy needed was a beating but Mary told her, "No, this little boy needs only love." She made that boy smile more during the 4 hours he was on the unit than the entire time he and his dad were here. He gave Mary a hug when he left.

My mom was faced with very difficult decisions that all had dire consequences. I was dealing with my mom's possibly inability to have life-saving cardiac surgery because the surgery could also have a life-threatening outcome. Mary took much time to explain all options to mom to help her make the correct decision. Mary took a grave situation and turned it into an informative session. She showed unbelievable interest and passion to my mother with all her decisions that had to be made. God Bless her!

We had the pleasure of having Mary as our nurse on May 14th. She is very pleasant, caring, and is most enjoyable to be around. Mary completes her job with both pride and respect for her patients and their families. She is comfortable with any questions and takes time to answer them. Mercy should be proud to have Mary on their staff.
