Mary was a "Heaven sent" RN for our 2-year-old son who was admitted to Riley for nearly 3 days. During our stay, she served with such warm heartfelt kindness towards my son, my wife, and me. Although to most this may sound like she was doing her job and applying herself to a medical nurse atmosphere, my wife, my son and I feel different and felt much more than that during our time at Riley. Mary felt like family as we continually watched as she bestowed the duties of her job on our son with such caring diligence and gentleness. She made her job look easy, doing so under pressure, with my wife and I beside her watching as she precisely entered a needle into our child's arm sticking a vein.
For a time period of our son's admittance, his blood sugar was tested every four hours along with two blood draws, and most of it was taken by Mary in the two days she served as our son's nurse. Although each poke started with our son crying, each poke ended with our son and Mary giving each other waves goodbye and a high five or knuckles. As Mary would leave the room our son was always watching with curiosity and usually a smile or puckered lip. It became evident our son kinda liked Mary's presence and my wife and I did too. She lightened the room with it being our first time and feeling the emotional shock of being at a Hospital with one of our sons. We not only felt like a family member was there with us but we felt we had a friend too and her name is Mary from Riley's Hospital's 7 West Department.
