My 2 ½ year old fell while trying to get out of our van and got a pretty bad cut above her right eye, so we made a trip to Urgent Care. From the moment we walked through the doors, Mary Ann was amazing. Although my daughter was scared Mary Ann managed to make her feel at ease. She immediately got down to her level so she would feel comfortable with her. Sometimes it was the simple things…giving her Neemo stickers, putting in the “Despicable Me” movie, saying my daughter could ‘squirt Mommy or Daddy with a syringe full of water’ (love those distraction methods). Even during the tougher times…when Mary Ann was cleaning out her wound, applying the numbing medicine, and later wrapping her tight to prepare for the stitches…she was so caring and so compassionate. That’s pretty scary stuff for a 2 ½ year old. And as if on cue when Dr. T began the procedure, she got close to her face and began singing…it was priceless. My daughter was captivated by her singing and would say, ‘again…again’ when she heard a song she really liked. The singing didn’t end until the procedure was complete and she got her pink band aid and red popsicle. She was a very happy little girl.
I was so grateful for the care and compassion she showed my daughter that day. I know that Mary Ann would say she did nothing special, but I will forever be grateful I walked through the doors of Children’s Mercy that afternoon and that she was there to greet us. She was truly amazing! Thank you for caring for my daughter as if she was your own!
