My husband and I have a nickname for Marvis, we call her Marvelous. Marvis truly embodies what a NICU nurse should be. She is so attentive and compassionate and she treats my son as if he were her own son. Marvis does not just take care of his medical needs, she comforts him and talks to him. Every time that she is assigned to him, I know he is in the best hands. She goes out of her way to make sure he is comfortable. She was the first nurse to give my son a candy cane. It is because of Marvis that my CDH survivor does not have an oral aversion to food. Marvis was the first nurse to put him on his belly. No other nurse had the confidence to even try, but Marvis gave him the chance to try belly time and he loved it! A CDH baby enjoying tummy time?! All thanks to Marvis believing in him. Not only does Marvis take amazing care of my son, but she takes great care of me as well. She takes the time to sit and explain everything to me. She talks me through my fears and doubts. She has given me hope and comfort. Most importantly she listens to me as a mother and validates my concerns. I have come to see Marvis as so much more than a NICU nurse. She has become part of my family. Every NICU nurse should aspire to be just as amazing and dedicated to her patients as Marvis is. When I have questions about a medication or a procedure or how to care for my son, Marvis always has the answers. She explains everything so that my non-medically trained mind can understand. Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh is lucky to have her, and my son is lucky to have such an amazing nurse take care of him.
