Last week I observed Martin Blaney creating a surgical mask, gown, and gloves for a 34 inch tall Mickey Mouse statue. What was so special to me was the smile on his face as he worked on it. What I was witnessing was truly a compassionate labor of love.
The statue belonged to a mentally challenged adult who used it as her "comfort figurine." She had just undergone surgery with Martin as her CRNA. Martin had allowed her to bring it with her into surgery, and then he personally took charge of it, promising her that it would be safe and not get lost. He wanted the figurine to make her smile when she woke up; therefore, he created the surgical garb and placed it on the tiny Mickey Mouse.
I do not know all the details of their interactions, but I do know the patient was very nervous as I coincidentally escorted her and her two caregivers to the day surgery unit when she arrived that morning.
Martin showed compassionate care and a deep consideration for this patient as he went above and beyond to reassure her on what must have been a very difficult day.
Thank you for being part of our lives, Martin Blaney, and for sharing your gift.
