Marissa Hommel’s nomination was submitted by a patient’s daughter and reads as follows:

“My father had open heart surgery and experienced complications afterwards causing him to spend 2 weeks on COU. I just feel that Marissa was so helpful and supportive to him (and us). Her care made his hospital stay much easier. She is so kind and personable. She explains things to where we can understand”.

Marissa demonstrated her commitment to her patients one day when there were several no call, no shows to her unit. This resulted in having only 2 RNs for a full 24-bed unit. She just told the night shift that they needed to just give her the highlights of their reports, she gathered up her materials and set off to care for her half of the unit. She did this calmly, matter-of-factly, and without complaint.

Her co-workers have acknowledged Marissa’s dedication and work ethic, as well. She has received the COU star employee award along with emails from co-workers to the clinical leader regarding her skills and performance during critical patient situations.
