Marie has been working at UH for approximately twenty two years, and spent eighteen of those years on H-Green -Orthopedic unit. Marie is a Registered Nurse with a gentle caring nature and her passion to provide competent and compassionate care with service excellence never wavers. To say that Marie is an "unsung hero" is truly an understatement.

Marie was born in Haiti where she volunteered for the Red Cross and provided first aid for victims of accidents or fire. I remember posing this question to Marie. "Why did you become a nurse?" Marie replied, "I became a nurse because I enjoy helping those in need. I truly feel that nursing is my vocation."

There have been many instances where Marie has gone above and beyond, but there is one particular instance that stands out in my mind, which was a deciding factor for me to nominate Marie for this award. Several weeks ago, Marie admitted a patient to the unit, and upon assessment she discovered the patient was homeless. Marie took an interest in this patient's appearance as he was wearing no socks and his clothing were torn and soiled.

The patient was hospitalized for approximately two weeks, while Marie worked diligently with the Social Worker and Case Manager to coordinate his care which included placement.

Prior to him being discharged she ensured the patient had clothing including socks which she personally purchased. This small act of kindness was just enough to put a big smile on the patient's face and speaks volumes about Marie's caring nature.

Marie truly upholds the values of this organization which is to have "One Goal, One Passion, Every Patient, Every Time." It is therefore, with great pride and honor that I nominate Ms. Marie Saint-Phar, RN, because she is truly one of the "unsung heroes" of UH.
