As a physician, it honestly takes a lot for me to fill out a nomination form and this is my first nomination ever. Marie is a nurse in case management who I have worked with for a year, and in my 10 years of clinical experience she has been one of the best case managers I have had the pleasure of working with. Daily, she is faced with difficult and almost insurmountable challenges in trying to help the patient population that I work with. Yet, she faces this with grace and compassion with every patient that she works with. Without hesitation I nominate Marie for the DAISY Award because I believe she represents all of the excellent attributes that the DAISY Award represents.

Marie had a patient with an extremely difficult social/psychological situation, which the hospital and its entire staff had experience with. I had never faced a situation this challenging in regards to psychosocial difficulties. Over the course of many months, Marie exhibited extraordinary compassion, understanding, and resourcefulness with regards to his care and ensuring he had a safe transition of care outside of the hospital. All of this in the face of a patient which, in all honesty, exhibited no gratitude to her for her monumental efforts. As such, I wanted to recognize her for her efforts as I believe that her efforts were over and beyond the normal scope.

...

Marie has a very special talent - the ability to listen to patients, families, and colleagues in a way that leaves them feeling "heard" and cared for. Marie's honesty, gentleness, empathy, and non-judgmental attitude creates a calming effect and brings people together in some of the most challenging of circumstances: the family struggling with home care, the patient deciding on palliative care, or a colleague needing help on a case. Marie "gets it." Marie develops trust and collaborates with others in ways that make a difference - when conflicts or differences arise, Marie has intuitive sense of when to help and when NOT to help so that people can sort through difficult decisions on their own. Marie has the respect of physicians, nurses, colleagues alike - professional and forthright, you will always know Marie's perspective and, most importantly, she can hear yours and allows space for both. That's Marie.

We're so proud that she works at Providence Holy Cross and is receiving this award. We are happy for our family of caregivers, our physicians, and for our patients who get to work with Marie.
