Nurses are often the "behind the scenes" type and /or fall into the "workhorse" category. Marian Brandt is in both of those categories. When I started on the IV team, Marian was immediately welcoming, encouraging, and was willing to teach with the utmost kindness. She has this approach with every new team member and even when she is helping our colleagues on the units. Our newer team members have blossomed due to her ability to be understanding, willing to help out in any situation, and building their confidence with grace.
Marian consistently displays this kindness and understanding of patients. As a PICC RN, she must consistently work with patients to determine the best plan of care for their vascular access. She works to ensure they fully understand the procedure, are well educated in the responsibilities of having PICC line, and she uses her calming, therapeutic voice to ensure they will be as comfortable as possible during the procedure. Marian has a wonderful bedside manner and attention to make sure patients and their families receive the best care possible. I have had patients ask if she is working and to say "hello" or ask if she can come to start their IV.
Marian also fulfills the role of facilitator on our team. As our leader for the evening, Marian works hard to support us on the team, make sure patients receive the right line, for the right medication, and at the right understanding when troubleshooting. The shift remains smooth and she keeps a smile on her face regardless of what challenges lie ahead.
Marian exemplifies the ideal vascular access nurse. She obtained her very difficult CRNI certification, she graduated with her BSN and attends conferences to ensure she is up to date on the latest trends in vascular and infusion nursing. She is an experienced preceptor to new nurses on the team and contributes to quality improvement by submitting idea cards.
Marian has been a significant part of my success and this nomination is in support of her achievements and to recognize her for the excellence she has contributed to the team and our patients.
