Mariamma Varughese, RN – The Troy Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nurses – August 2009 – Troy Beaumont Hospital
Mariamma is an extraordinary nurse. What makes her special is the “heart” she brings to her profession for the past twenty-two years as a Beaumont Nurse. Not only are her patients the center of all that she does, but also the well-being of their family.
A letter from a 3-North patient describes how Mariamma helped a hospitalized patient and his wife deal with the death of their mother-in-law. This family stated she provided “tender loving care to the entire family”, taking the time to talk and provide comfort. Another letter shows the special relationship Mariamma had with a former cancer patient and how that caring extended to her husband beyond the walls of the hospital upon her death. She also cares about her colleagues – always ready to listen, advise and give a hug whenever needed.
Her co-workers feel honored to work with her. Mariamma is a nurse who embodies the Beaumont Standards and demonstrates clinical excellence and true compassion to those committed to her care. She establishes relationships with her patients and families and shows in her words and actions what nursing is all about.
