My Story – Although I am a chaplain at UW Hospital, I do not work on F6/6 and had never met Marcy. That all changed when I went to the ED one day while I was working and was admitted to the hospital with some pretty severe health problems. After surgery, I was placed on F6/6. All of the staff there were wonderful but one of the nurses stood out as an excellent caregiver and amazing professional. Marcy provided fantastic care to me. I do not feel that she treated me any differently because I am a hospital employee. I believe that she treats all of her patients with the extremely high level of care and compassion with which she treated me.
Innovation – Marcy strives for excellence in her work. One of the ways she does this is to constantly monitor her work and to make improvements in the way that she meets the needs of her patients and their families. At the end of each day, Marcy asked if there was anything more she could do for me and if any of my needs were not addressed. It truly was her desire to do the best job that she could possible do.
Integrity – I was very sick for several days and it was unclear why I was so ill. Marcy was an advocate for me and constantly asked questions of the doctors so that they could properly diagnose my condition. Eventually, due in part to Marcy’s advocating for me as a patient, doctors discovered that part of the reason I was so sick was because I was having a reaction to one of the medications that they were giving to me. After the medication was discontinued, I quickly recovered. Not only did Marcy provide care for me, she also provided care to my partner. He was very worried about my symptoms and had many, many questions. Marcy was patient with him and provided him with as much information as she could to give him peace of mind.
Compassion – Marcy was extremely sympathetic and responsive to my needs and to my partner’s needs. She kept a very close eye on my symptoms and when the medication was no longer providing relief, she immediately tried other medications to make me comfortable. She also worked with other staff and she knew when to get help from other nurses and CNAs to ensure that my needs were being met. As I said above, my partner also greatly appreciated the time that Marcy spent putting his mind at ease and addressing his concerns.
Accountability – Marcy never waited to be told what to do. She closely monitored me and almost anticipated my needs. At the beginning of each shift, she would check on me and immediately take care of anything that was needed. Likewise, at the end of e ach shift, she often stayed late to ensure that I was well cared for. I felt strongly that Marcy honestly cared about my well being and did everything in her power to assist me on my journey to recovery.
Respect – One of Marcy’s greatest qualities is her ability to listen to her patients. She listed to my concerns and addressed them. She treated me like I was important and that my well being truly mattered to her.
Excellence – Every day that Marcy worked with me, she met and surpassed my expectations. Because I am a chaplain here at the hospital, I already knew prior to being a patient here how wonderful the nurses are. Marcy further proved to me that the nurses at UW are amazing at what they do and that they have helped to build the excellent reputation that UW Hospital has in our community.
