A nurse's gut instinct is never wrong. Maggie was the nurse assigned to a liver transplant patient who was ill. The day was very busy with multiple and frequent lab draws, imaging, as well as ongoing changes to the patient's care plan. Maggie stayed on top of every lab check, change in IV fluids, and quickly ensured the patient went to and from radiology in a timely manner. Even though the day was busy, and she was constantly getting more new orders, she never once complained and kept a smile on her face all day. She very tenderly cared for her patient ensuring that this patient received the best nursing care as proven by her selfless service. Maggie's nurse gut feeling told her that something wasn't right with the patient and she was indeed very correct. I am so glad Maggie spoke up and advocated for this patient because I hung onto her gut feeling and pushed to get to the bottom of what was wrong with the patient. This is just one example of Maggie's ongoing commitment to her profession. She always shows up to work with a smile on her face and ready to care for her patients. She escalates when necessary and advocates for her patients. I've watched her grow from a new graduate nurse to a well-seasoned experienced nurse on D8 who is seen as a resource to her peers. She displays a commitment to excellence seeking to improve her knowledge and is involved in the quality and safety council. She displays her passionate advocacy by advocating for all patients on the unit not just her own. She speaks up with ideas and concerns. She happily volunteered to go to the ED as the ACS liaison. I am so thankful I get to work with Maggie and so proud of the commitment to nursing and to exceptional patient care.
