Maddie went above and beyond to help take care of one her patients in PACU. The patient was living in government housing and the patient needed help with her medications. The social worker had been working on getting a letter for the patient's nephew to stay with the patient in her housing unit during her recovery period. The medication assistance had not been addressed and the patient's nephew was not going to be paid until the next day and the patient needed assistance with her post-op medications. Maddie called the pharmacy at Memphis and faxed her post-op medication prescription and made arrangements to pick up the medications for the family. She paid for them out of her pocket and gave them to the patient and her nephew prior to discharge. I think this showed extreme care and compassion.

Just last week, Maddie was taking care of a critical patient who had to be resuscitated. Maddie had been with the patient the day before and had developed a good relationship with the patient's husband and mother. She kept them informed of every consult and the patient's condition. She explained procedures and tests. I witnessed her kindness and caring first hand in her conversations with the family. Her comfort and compassion shined through in her interactions. The day the patient took a turn for the worse, she was a leader during the code blue and showed excellent clinical and communication skills.
